You’ll find it behind the Recreation Field, opposite the pavilion, on land given to the village by the Beckett family. It first began to take shape when the people of both villages chose to have a wildlife garden to celebrate the Millennium. 

 

Now, all these years (and a lot of work!) later, we have an amazing wildlife oasis where you can discover the plants and animals through the seasons, sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility or get involved in caring for the garden. 

 

In 2016 we received a grant through Ryedale District Council, from the company that built The Sidings. So we now have a set of panels that tell you what you might find. 

It’s amazing to think that in 2000 the site was part of a field. All the trees in the woodland area were donated by people in the villages – so none are more than 18 years old yet it’s now an established wood and home to a variety of birdlife. 

The highlight of the garden, with its stunning yellow flag iris and marsh marigold, the pond is a great place to look for swallows and you can often see bats diving down for a drink just as it goes dark. 

 

Bring along a net and a bucket and see what you can find – please put them back though! Our tadpoles are happy in the pond. 

The Garden is managed as a charity by volunteers from the villages. We are always eager to welcome new helpers, whatever your level of experience or expertise so if you would like to get involved in practical work in caring for the garden or in fundraising, please contact Amanda Carroll on 01439 771838 or look out for the dates of work tasks on this website. 

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to the Sale on Saturday and thank you too to all of you who donated. Together we raised a fantastic £1,200. 

 

The sunshine and Rose House’s stunning garden provided a beautiful setting and together with all the plants, cakes, preserves and superb crafts, and of course, all the people, it all made for a wonderful atmosphere. 

 

Dr Powell kindly agreed to draw the raffle and Richard Roe was the lucky winner of the hamper.

The money will help to pay for the insurance and for major maintenance tasks. All the regular maintenance is done by volunteers. 

 

Do go along and enjoy the Wildlife Garden. The vegetation is tall now but if you look carefully you can find some gems.
